Chapter 4

Present time

I called all the people that had interviewed with me, told the ones we wanted to hire when to come in for work and those we didn’t want, I thanked them for coming in and said we’d keep their resume on file, which we would, in files of Next, Maybe Later, and Probably Not. Jean would have to re-interview the Maybe-Laters if we had a space open.

I hired fourteen servers and two hosts: Kellen and Patrice.

Unfortunately, I called Pat last which didn’t leave me with a good excuse to keep the conversation short.

“Montie, I knew you would call. I almost quit my job at the Hyatt last night, but I couldn’t be sure.”

“It’s never good to take a chance like that.”

“You sound like you know from personal experience.”

“Well, almost, but if you had quit and I hadn’t hired you, you’d be out of everything. You’d have blamed it on me.”

“I’d never blame a nice woman like you. It would have been my own fault.”

“But we still wouldn’t want you jobless.”

“Oh, Montie, you don’t have to worry about me. I’ll be fine wherever I go.”

“I’m sure you will. A woman like you can do a lot of things.”

“More than you realize.”

What did she mean by that?

“Now, you’re currently working in the evenings?” I asked.

“Yes. Six until closing…”

“And you have to give two weeks’ notice?”

“Yes, I’ll submit it tonight.”

“Would you work two jobs for a week? We can schedule your time here in the mornings. Ten ‘til two should be enough time to learn all about Clayton Industries.”

“Certainly. Wouldn’t be a problem at all. One thing I was going to ask you. Is your name really Montie? It only said in the advertisement to make an appointment with J.M. Cleaver.”

“Yes. My full name is J. Montgomery Cleaver.”

“J. Montgomery?”

“A family name. My mother was trying to suck up to her aunt.”

“Did it work?”

“Not yet.”

“I see. I take it you don’t like the J part.

“No. Not at all.”

“Then I won’t ask. You certainly make the name Montgomery lovelier than I’ve heard it before.”

“You shouldn’t say those things, Pat. I’d think you were coming on to me.”

“And if I was?”

“You shouldn’t. I’m your boss. At least for a while.” I swallowed to clear my throat. “And I’ve got to go. I have work to do. I’ll see you a week from Monday at ten A.M.” I hung up as fast as I could before I started answering her comments. I couldn’t encourage her. I shouldn’t encourage her. I definitely wouldn’t really encourage her…at all. Damn, Cleaver! She’s an employee, and a new one at that.

Servers and hosts started that Monday.

Now I was standing in front of the crowd of people gathered there, waiting for me to begin the meeting. This was the third time I’d done this particular type of meeting, the Welcome to the Clayton Family. It still made my stomach clench. I couldn’t believe I’d risen to this high an office in such an exciting business.
